Monitoring the activity of precast bridge span transporters for the construction of a 6.6km viaduct

Project

Line 1 of the Manila Metro in the Philippines, which began operating in 1984, is 20km long and has 20 stations. It is part of a network of three lines, serving a population now reaching over 15 million people. To cope with traffic difficulties, Line 1 will be extended by 6.6km to serve five additional stations.

Challenge

As part of the existing Manila LRT1 extension project in the Philippines, Bouygues Travaux Publics wanted to ensure that bridge construction cycles were optimized and the construction schedule aligned with the overall project programme. One of the key elements in the construction of this viaduct was monitoring of the transporters, that were responsible for delivering the precast bridge spans from the prefabrication yard to the launching gantry for construction.

The objectives of the transporter monitoring project:

  • Remotely identify the position of transporters and verify travel status.
  • Manage departure and arrival times to guarantee the pace of production and associated interfaces such as road crossings.
  • Measure average speed and delivery time as they occur to adjust the schedule.

Solution

We have equipped 2 transporters and 1 launching gantry each equipped with a GPS sensor, communicating in 2G/3G and connected to the vehicle’s battery to locate in real time and to provide performance indicators dedicated to productivity and safety.

Key services:

A
Geolocation of equipment in real time on a site map

A
Definition of zones (loading/unloading)

A
Real-time status of the equipment (moving / stoppage) and direction of travel

A
KPIs: departure and arrival times, average speed per section, number of cycles per day

Benefits

Supervision of the transporters and major resources on such a large-scale site, make it possible to anticipate the various work cycles, to react promptly in the right location in the event of deviations, and ultimately to secure the progress of the bridge viaduct.
