River water quality monitoring at the Lock of Mericourt

Project

Renovation and extension work going to take place on a lock on the Seine River at Méricourt (approximately 35 miles downstream West from Paris).

Thus, for Bouygues Trauvaux Publics, it was important to study the operation’s impact on the river with water quality monitoring.

Duration : 43 months

Monitoring water quality and controlling the construction site impact on the Seine River near the Méricourt area.

Challenges

To ensure the operation doesn’t impact the quality of the waterway it was important to distinguish between pollution in the river upstream vs downstream of the constructio works. It was also important to make sure that initial state of the water (temperature, acidity, oxygen, turbidity…) due to regular operation of the lock isn’t mistaken for pollution caused by the operation.

Need: monitor water quality

Our solution

Within the UBY Environment solution, we installed water quality sensors attached to buoys, anchored to the river bed upstream and downstream from the operation.

The water was analysed in a laboratory to have a reading of the initial composition.

The uMonitor platform is set up to send alerts in case set thresholds are exceeded during longer periods.
