Meet Sofia – deployment engineer at UBY
What is your educational background?
I grew up in Morocco; after an undergraduate course in Science (classe préparatoire) in Fez, I decided to study in France. Attracted by the construction industry, I joined Polytech, an engineering school in Lille.
During my course to become a geotechnical and civil engineer, I joined the apprenticeship track during which I gained valuable work experience with a group of surveyors. At the end of the work-study program, I was lucky enough to be offered a permanent position as a Data Manager within that same company. In April 2023, eager for change, I embarked on a new adventure at UBY.

When did you join UBY? What were your motivations?
I joined UBY in April 2023.
I had long wanted to join a fast-growing company with a start-up spirit! I think it’s in this kind of company where everything has to be created that you can learn most!
As UBY is part of a large international company, I also find it very reassuring to belong to a large group in which there are many opportunities for development.
I really want to participate in large-scale projects!
What is the job description of a deployment engineer at UBY? Can you tell us a little bit about one of your field missions?
I am in charge of deploying our dedicated solutions on construction sites, mainly underground or on civil engineering structures.
I feel lucky to be able to work on different sites and with a variety of scopes. I like the international dimension of my position since I also work on support missions abroad.
A few days ago, I was working at night on the Flaubert Bridge project (in Rouen, Normandy), I installed prisms on train tracks nearby for Bouygues Travaux Publics, one of our major clients.
This automated topographic monitoring system allows us to see if the railway tracks, which are located near the site, are impacted by the works carried out by our client.
Our solution sends out alerts in the event that movement or deformation thresholds recommended by the rail company (SNCF) are exceeded. On this construction site, the value for immediate action is 26 mm.
I am the link between the sales team at UBY and the end-user of our solutions. I only leave the site when I am sure that our instruments have been correctly installed and configured and the data is flowing in to our platforms… It’s rewarding and exciting to see the feedback in real time.
What do you particularly like about your job?
At UBY, no two days are the same… What I love about my job is that I am learning every day! I spread my worktime between the office and the construction site.
I find that there is a great atmosphere at UBY and above all real support between co-workers in my team!
We are a small company and it is easy to get to know each other! People say I’m the soul of the party as I’m always up for after-work activities!
How do you see the future at UBY?
Today I am in charge of medium-sized projects, in the long term I would like to also work on larger projects that UBY has secured such as monitoring worksites of lot 4 of the future Toulouse metro line C or on lot 3 of the future line 17 of the Paris metro.
Thanks to my training as a surveying engineer, I mainly work on structural engineering solutions but UBY has 7 monitoring solutions in its portfolio (environmental, health, safety, productivity monitoring, etc.) which gives me the opportunity to increase my skills in these fields. I have a curious temperament and in the future, I hope to have the opportunity to develop my skills in these solutions…
